Libby sat among friends in the café in rainy Cabo dolefully bemoaning their fate. “One day of cloudless sky, is that too much to ask for a whole spring break?”

“Girl, somewhere there’s a farmer with a mortgage sitting on a tractor looking up at pure blue with despair.”

“We’re not in Kansas anymore,” spat Libby to a round of guffaws, unironically shoveling in her kale salad, thinking she slayed.

The sky had never seemed clearer, bluer, freer, as it did when Gracie stepped outside for the first time after signing the papers.

“You’ll never find someone else like me,” Michael had sneered during their last phone call.

“Is that a promise?” Gracie had laughed before hanging up.

Now the cloudless sky seemed a fulfillment of that promise. Gracie laughed and threw her arms wide open, soaking up the sunlight.
