Step by step, the monster grew near. Its blind eyes locked directly on Laura.
Laura held her breath and embraced the baby. It was silent.
The monster stood just a step away and listened.
The baby stirred, and Laura clutched it tightly to her chest so no sounds escaped.
The monster moved towards the door.
A weak cry ripped the silence.
The monster stopped, searching the room with a blank stare.
Wide-eyed, Laura squeezed the baby tighter, shushing its muffled cries.
The monster sniffed the stale air and shuffled away.
Laura released her grip—the baby was silent and still.
Jessica lost her hearing late in life. 30 years into her marriage. Is it crazy, she thought, that I’m relieved not to hear Ed’s endless chatter? But there would be no relief. He learned to sign. And continued to inundate her with his nonsense, now through a dancing dervish of digits. And worse, she had to look at him to boot, no more mindless nodding while she stayed glued to the telly. To all appearances it was accidental when she closed his hand in the car door. She relaxed, realizing she’d have some peace at least ‘til winter. Mitten season.
Microdosing with Miguel - 100 words for SILENCE (Also, a wonderful short lead into meditation, should you need it!)
_____
“Close your eyes. Take a deep breath in. And out. Still your body. Still your mind.” Her voice was melodious. Soothing and calm. Floating through the air, coming closer and fading away simultaneously. “Listen to the sounds around you. Filter each out, one by one, until you only hear your breath. Then listen to the sound between your breaths.”
Her words lulled me.
“Focus on what you hear. For even in silence, we are not alone.”
Focus.
Breathe in. Thump-thump. Breathe out. Thump-thump.
I blinked my eyes open. I was by myself in the space. But I was not alone.
