Christmas morning embraced us with the warmth of the fireplace, untouched cookies, a full glass of milk, and, most importantly, a palpable absence of presents under the tree.
The kids cried, and explaining why Santa had bailed on us was not easy. Explaining the body stuck in the chimney to the police was way harder, though.

The gastroenterologist had a wicked sense of humor. Yuletide he announced next diagnostic steps via festive headgear. Entering the patient exam room, holding test results, he explained.
“If it’s a red floppy Santa cap it means endoscopy. Down the chimney.”
Merv shuffled uncomfortably on the crinkly paper. “You’re wearing a Grinch hat!”
“Sorry, that means breaking in through the basement.”
