Our choice had been gleaned from thousands of entries, the winning tale flowing with an unforced elegance, the simple words framing flawless beauty. As contestants filed into the auditorium, I tried to pick out the writer, assuming they would match the sophistication of their work. Was it the dapper gentleman in the three piece suit? The chic lady in the exquisite beaded gown? As I called out the winner's name, an elderly woman wearing a homely jumper walked to the podium. As I looked into her eyes, I saw the dignity that transcends external trappings, the true source of elegance.

If only they knew…

Sloan pondered.

I could end them in a blink of an eye.

Muted bulbs shimmered above the cocktail bar, shedding little light on the wealthy drinkers below.

The woman sipped her Paper Plane—elegance radiating from her. No one would guess in a million years the life she lives after the bars close down.

She signaled for the check. The unfortunate man to her left said it was on him, making her decision an easy one. Smiling, she leaned in, whispering an invitation.

They left together, the poor bastard thinking he was about to get lucky.

If only he knew…
