The circle of candles danced in the dark. The kids chanted “Bloody Mary, please join us!” three times.
Complete silence absorbed the room.
The younger kids, huddled together and trembling, felt tears well up in their eyes.
A blow. A shriek. All of the candles snuffed out.
Stomping and screaming filled the attic as the kids searched for their parents.
“Oh. C’mon guys! Chill! It’s just a wind!” shouted the oldest before following them. Afraid too, but of the parents who would scold him for scaring the little ones.
The “wind” slowly sneaked behind.
100-word story—Prompt: “Attic”
I like to think I’m above it all. Safely tucked away up here in my attic, I can hear the rumblings and stumblings of those out and about below me. Fools. They’ll never find me, and that’s just fine. I’m done with all of them. I’m done with the world. Maybe one day someone from down there will wonder what’s up here. They might one day lower the disappearing stairway and climb the wobbly steps into my domain. And that’s when they’ll find me. Alone and happy. And covered by a layer of dust. In storage. And out of style.
“Give it to me straight, doc.”
Archie had spent his life in the building trade. So, the sawbones spoke in his language.
“The foundation is crumbling. Keep wearing those compression socks.
“The main heat pump is on its last legs. Might be time for a pacemaker.
“The plumbing is a disaster. You must get up five times a night.
“Overall, it’s close to a tear down.
“On the bright side, the attic is good as new. Not a cobweb.”
Chalk that up as good news, bad news, thought Arch. It’s what made the rest of it so difficult to bear.
