Charles stared into his client’s cold, empty eyes. The sound of the gavel against the wood and the verdict echoed in his mind.
Not guilty.
The dark stain on Charles’s chest spread, changing the blue suit into burgundy. “I did my job,” he said, the light fading from his gaze.
“You shouldn’t have,” the client grinned, wrenching the knife deeper.
Dealer’s note: We’re watching Suits. So that’s where the prompt came from.
I brushed the hair from his eyes and kissed the tip of his tiny nose, as I buttoned up his little suit. My boy looked so adorable, I could barely stand it.
A voice asked, "Ready, ma'am?"
Unable to answer, I nodded, my eyes filling with tears as they closed the small coffin. It hurt too much to say goodbye.
"Not a suit." Why do people who know nothing about you get to decide what the deceased wears?
"But sir, it is customary--"
Brad interrupted, "I have his aloha shirt, shorts, and flip flops with me."
Aghast, the mortician sputtered. "You can't mean--"
"That's exactly what I mean."
An hour later, guests gathered, fresh from the surf, windblown and salty.
