The air licks flames on her skin. The water she pours on her face and neck is useless. It’s been with them in the desert for hours.
“How much more?” She asks her boyfriend, from the front seat.
“I don’t know. Everything is in order. It should be running,” he replies.
She sighs, slamming her head against the headrest. That’s what they get for buying a car that’s dirt cheap.
Annie could sling gossip like a five-card dealer at Caesar’s, firing lightning-fast barbs all over the neighborhood. When her own kids ran into trouble and her husband slipped, she found her little hate missiles stuck to her like Velcro and failed to launch. The invites and tennis dates dried up. She found that if you dig in the dirt long enough it can be hard to get your hands clean.
