Their hearts drummed in sync as their eyes locked. No winner would come out of this game; only one would come out alive.
The smell of gunpowder and sweat lingered in the air. A single drop of sweat ran over Tony’s forehead. The cold steel of the gun bit his sweat-covered temple.
The barrel spun.

Last empty chamber.
Tony’s mouth dried out. He met his best friend’s eyes and handed him the revolver.
"A Most Worthy Opponent"
The last grains of sand fell into the bottom of the hourglass.
“The game’s over,” he said.
Death scratched his chin. “Interesting. I’ve never played to a draw before.”
“So what do we do now?”
Death shrugged. “I suppose, by default, you get another year. The terms state that I must win.”
He extended his hand to his opponent. Death took it and shook it. “I’ll see you in a year,” he said.
Death winked at him. “See you then.”
Ricky’s first marriage turned into a busted flush. Second try against all odds he drew his way to 21. And the two kids were blackjacks no doubt about it. The rest of his life as for most of us a 50/50 proposition, some days red some days black. Round and round he spun. He believed in the big croupier in the sky but couldn’t ignore the recurring role of chance. Right ‘til the oncologist rolled his final pass. Snake eyes.
