Inhale.
It’s funny how an oxygen bubble in your lungs can slow down the world. As soon as I took a deep breath, the trembling stopped, the vision cleared, and the world drowned out, interrupted only by the drum of my pulse. Just me and the target.
Exhale

Bullseye. I won.
Rod breathed in all life had to offer, swallowing great gulps of it like a halibut cut from the hook. Power. Cash. Mistresses. Inhaled pleasure like an industrial vacuum. Drew in heady draughts of what he deemed success.
Ironic an exhale would bring it all down.
“0.12 percent,” said the state trooper, bathed in flashing red, shaking his head at the tanned, well coiffed likeness on Rod’s license. “You trying to break this thing? Lace your fingers behind your head.”
Inhale, exhale.
Inhale. Exhale.
Try to relax.
Breath in, out.
“You’re almost there,” said the nurse.
Another wave of searing pain.
Oh my god! She squeezed the hand in hers, leaving little arcs from her nails in the flesh.
“You’re doing great, honey.” His voice an anchor, close enough to feel on her face.
Just a little more and it would be done.
“Okay, now push.”
She pushed, she bored down with all her might.
A cry was her reward.
