80-word story challenge—Prompt: “Wine”

I open my bottle of wine, “Ad Nauseam,” unscrewing the cap. I used to drink “De Trop.” I pour my wine and marvel at its blotched consistency. Not quite red; not quite white—nowhere close to white. Not quite fruity, earthy, savory, oaky, or even minerally. It’s more of a gravelly consistency with an afterthought of rotten baity. It’s my last bottle, so tomorrow night, it’s “Never Again” Reserve. It’s not even over, but it’s already a very good year.

The Song of Dionysius

🍇🍇🍇🍇🍇🍇🍇🍇🍇🍇

Whiling away my time,

Always guzzling wine.

There's no time to dine,

I'm too busy drinking wine.

What's yours is mine,

And what's mine is mine,

Please don't bother to whine,

I refuse to share my wine.

In the morning, wine is fine,

At noon, I pine for wine,

Dinner is from the vine,

I drink wine 'til I'm supine.

So heed my little rhyme,

Poor mortal filled with grime:

Leave me to drink the wine,

While you... drink water!
