For twenty years, Maria lived a life she resented. Chained to her husband by the fear of solitude.
She stood at the bridge, her heartbeat so loud she couldn't hear the roaring river below. No more. She thought, stepping to the edge.
I can't do this anymore.
The ring slipped off her finger, and the shackles broke. She threw it as far as possible. As it sank into the dark water, a terrible weight lifted off her shoulders.
Freedom at last.
Raccoon note: The pendulum of the Dealer’s stories sways from a love story to a failed marriage, haha. This prompt has been sitting in my folder for some time now, the original idea was about Maria leaving her job, but I thought the ring x chain metaphor works really well.
The bicycle shed its chains, pedaling off into the sunset on its own. Sarah watched, bewildered, as her trusty steed gained sentience. Nearby, a tree uprooted itself, its branches forming chain-like links to pull itself along. The world was turning topsy-turvy.
Even thoughts weren't safe. Ideas chained themselves together, leaping from mind to mind. Sarah's confusion jumped to a passerby, then a dog, then a lamppost. By nightfall, the entire town buzzed with a shared, inexplicable perplexity.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​
The galvanized jungle gym had two swings that hung down on chains. He sat down to swing, on one . Pumped his body and legs to reach the sky by letting go. Gravity tugged him to the ground. He tried again; twirled, twisted the chains to be enwrapped in the steel jaws. Frightened , the chains unwound, let him go. Dizzy, he took one step; tossed his cookies. Life unchained teaches lessons. Slowly he learned his lesson.
