I love how one prompt creates so many stories!

PROMPT: CHAINS

THE CHAINS

The chains were everywhere, wrapped all around him.

The weight of them was almost unbearable and he could barely move.

But they were all necessary.

Because being practically immobile was a small sacrifice to make, if it meant he had a better shot at winning the Mr. T lookalike contest… 😎

Great Great Great Great Aunt Florence was struck by lightning while milking a cow, and electrocution killed every Oliver woman since. Francis grew up with warnings from her mom, until she herself was zapped by an arc from a lousy microwave. Rubber soles, circuit breakers, plastic utensils, precautions. Francis didn’t even own a hair dryer. But the chain would be unbroken, she thought, as the wind blew down a writhing power line that landed in the puddle where she stood.

That’s such an unfortunate curse. I imagined her living life like Ash in the first episode of Pokémon when he gets Pikachu and wears rubber gloves and shoes to handle him

I was rooting for poor Francis! 🥺 Nice story.

“Niles Express: Killing the Competition”

Bullets fed through the gun’s chain as I fired at the blue jet in front of me. An orange ball of flame consumed the tail, and black smoke rose from the wings. The plane spiraled downward in a blaze. Flying a shipment of boxes for Niles means blowing the competition away. After I killed my first competitor, I didn’t eat, sleep, or bathe for a week. Thinking of them as the enemy helps, along with a BIG bottle of Kraken.

The prisoners wore chains as they tread through desert sands.

The sun, a lonely orb, hung high in the cloudless sky.

One prisoner fell, taking the rest down with him.

They were now facedown, inhaling sand and dust.

Then the beatings began. But they did not stand.

Hours passed.

Bliss. The cool night air and the striking silver of a crescent moon.

Were they dead or alive? It didn’t matter.

The wind caressed their cheeks and wiped away their tears.

80 mg of Chains: "Second Date: a couple linked by time"

They had dinner 25 years ago, each of them seeing someone else at the time, which had made it feel like cheating. She remembers they talked about how they each wanted to visit Paris. There had been a definite attraction, but not enough to pull them away from who they each eventually married. They lost touch. Now, she is divorced. He is widowed. And they are having dinner again at the same restaurant. She says, “We were talking about Paris…”

I like your microdosing challenges. Inspiring, almost muse-level.

80mg microfiction Chains

He carefully split the flower stalks and one by one threaded them together, then softly placed the daisy chain around her neck.

The gentle movement roused her, and she raised her head to look at him.

“There! So pretty now… so perfect,” he whispered.

Behind the duct tape, she smiled, her screams of laughter muffled.

Tears of joy trickling from her eyes, she strained at her chains to wrap her arms about him.

“I know…I know!” he murmured.

Holy hell. I take it that it's a warped interpretation of the situation, right? If so, it's so disturbing and I love it.

Hi Miguel. glad you liked it. my default settings are aliens and horror so Chains instantly clicked for me. now i read it again, i can see it could be read sexually as well as just psycho killer... the gist of it is that his warped mind sees the signs of her terror as signs of love. quite pleased with it. it just came out in one go and didn't even need editing to cut the words down. sometimes the magic happens hehehehe

The galvanized jungle gym had two swings that hung down on chains. He sat down to swing, on one . Pumped his body and legs to reach the sky by letting go. Gravity tugged him to the ground. He tried again; twirled, twisted the chains to be enwrapped in the steel jaws. Frightened , the chains unwound, let him go. Dizzy, he took one step; tossed his cookies. Life unchained teaches lessons. Slowly he learned his lesson.

I had too look up the meaning of "galvanized," having realized I have not used that word before! I like the creative take on this theme. Chains usually have a negative connotation but they are common at the playground!

Silly typo. "To" not "Too"

"tossed his cookies" - love that!

I stare through the glass to the dazzling beauties displayed in rows of pillowy settings. I can pick mine out right away. Gorgeous. But can I afford it? It will change my life big time. Will be a heavy weight around my neck. Boy, maybe I should have waited, I’m not sure I’m ready for a commitment like this. The guy next to me probably thinking the same thing. All is not gold that glitters. Especially at the maternity ward.

The bicycle shed its chains, pedaling off into the sunset on its own. Sarah watched, bewildered, as her trusty steed gained sentience. Nearby, a tree uprooted itself, its branches forming chain-like links to pull itself along. The world was turning topsy-turvy.

Even thoughts weren't safe. Ideas chained themselves together, leaping from mind to mind. Sarah's confusion jumped to a passerby, then a dog, then a lamppost. By nightfall, the entire town buzzed with a shared, inexplicable perplexity.
