Salty air prickled Alfonso’s skin as he stepped out of the lower deck, lured by a song that made his soul bleed.
The endless ocean reflected the star-filled sky, looking like a tapestry from God, yet all Alfonso could look at was her.
A mermaid with a skin of alabaster and hair of gold and fire. Alfonso didn’t hesitate; he didn’t think; he just followed the tune.
A fool is a sailor who forgets the Syren’s songs.
When Claire died suddenly, Gary vowed to raise their Amelia in her mother's image. Equal parts Earth mother and badass. He allowed Amelia to sample the usual cartoon classics. Many of which, at least newer ones, embraced a warrior princess ethos. Not all of them, however. He swelled with pride, and heard echoes of his beloved bride, now gone, when Amelia issued a terse indictment of Ariel’s choices under the sea. “Who would trade a tail for a stupid boy?”

Monty spotted her in his garden, lounging on the herb spiral like she’d paid rent.
“Excuse me,” he called, tail twitching. “This is a private nap establishment.”
She yawned. “I’m Mermaid.”
Monty blinked. “That’s not a name, that’s a plot twist.”
She flicked an ear. “Check the tag, whisker-boy.”
He did. Mermaid. Glittery letters.
By sunset, she’d stolen his sunbeam and two compliments.
He sat beside her, sighing. “Great. A diva with branding.”
She purred. “And you love it already.”
